The Look
Strephon kissed me in the spring,
Robin in the fall,
But Colin only looked at me
And never kissed at all.
Strephon's kiss was lost in jest,
Robin's lost in play,
But the kiss in Colin's eyes
Haunts me night and day.
For me, there are two similar interpretation on this short poem. One is the by taking “kiss” and 'look” with their literal meanings, the other is by giving “kiss” and “look” a much deeper meaning.
One, if you are to read the poem you would notice that there are definitely four persons involved. One is the speaker or the narrator of the poem, the other one is Strephon, the third is Robin and the last one is Colin. This poem implies that the girl, the narrator have already met many guys. Strephon and Robin represents them. This guys have given her as much as a kiss to signify their love for her. And she thought it was the greatest feeling she could ever feel when she is in love.
Now here comes this very tender yet bizarre man who gently crushed into her life with his very mild way of expressing his feelings and that is through his his looks which left more than the fossils of the bones of the largest dinosaur that ever walked on earth. Those looks, as she called it “the kiss of his eyes”, bothered her in the most pleasing and wanting manner. She could not help but think of those “looks” over and over again, from the moment she wakes up until the time she closes her eyes as she sleeps.
Another interpretation is that, if you are to put some implications on the girl narrating the poem had lots of experience on guys courting her. She thought that the most complex, intimate and extravagant manner of courting was the best way expressing a guy's feelings towards her. She had this thought that one who do this to her has the greatest and the most sincere feelings of all.
Now here comes this very ordinary man who came into the scene with his very simple way of expressing his feelings towards her. But his simple way tickled the girl's attention and her interest as well. With her peculiar, although simple manner of connecting, she got the girl.
